10 Words I Could Live Without

Words are my thing. I teach writing and I translate, so basically my brain is always working in, around, with, over, under and through the world of words. I spend my day thinking about gripping issues, such as: how could I say that better? differently? in Italian? in formal English? more colloquially? more colorfully? Could I use this turn of phrase? or would another be better? I like to play with words, rhyme words, make puns, invent nonsense words.

Basically, I love words!

So just for fun, I'm linking up with The Good Life's Monday Listicles because today's challenge is to list your 10 least favorite words.

How can you not like a word? It's just a word, right? What you really don't like is the meaning that the word communicates . . . the concept that the word represents. Words are basically just a bunch of letters hanging out together, but there are a lot of concepts that I could live without.

In no particular order . . .

1. Narrow-minded

2. Ugly

3. Disrespect

4. Violence

5. Rudeness

6. Dictator

7. Hate

8. Fear

9. Incompetence

10. Conformity

Stop by The Good Life to check out the words other bloggers can't stand.

Awesome list! I especially dislike conformity. I've always been an odd-ball and now I'm trying to bring out that odd-ness in my writing.

This is a great list!! I love how the images add so much more to the words. Incompetence is one I wouldn't have come up with on my own, but when I read it I realized how much I dislike this word, its meaning and how much I see it in my daily life (mainly when I am at a store). It frustrates me and I just want to shout "Come on, get your act together!" :) Thanks for a great list!

I love this!! Your introduction is lovely. And you chose the perfect pictures to go with the words. I am SO HAPPY you linked up.
See you next week.

Crystal - that's great, I love an odd-ball! :-)

K - doesn't it just drive you nuts?

Stasha - Thank you, it was fun!

Jen - I thought that was pretty darn ugly! ;-)

good list of words and concepts to live without!

I could totally do without these words/concepts in our vocabulary.

Yes. Conformity is definitely a word that should be used less often. Every teen should know this word and avoid it like the plague...

I'll add my own 2 cents (words) - just sayin'! When that phrase first came out it was fine, but now anybody and everybody with a blog and an opinion has to include just sayin' atleast once in a post. It was like when the word 'natch' was so in vogue. Ugh.

Love this post & interesting! That my way or the highway really gets me riled up - meaning when a person says that! We are all different & we have to respect that!

Incompetence - yes I dislike it immensely! Love that you did this with visuals.

Great list, very well written. I could definitely do without these words.

I may steal this idea. It's so weird how just letters can convey their own meaning.

Popping in from SITS....
That is a great list...right on the mark. The images, you found to go with your words, were great as well.

Wishing you a beautiful day.....

I love this! Even though you dislike these words, it must have been sort of fun to come up with them....

Glad you all liked my list! I thought of many more words to add to it...but perhaps 10 is enough!

Wow, really awesome post, and great photos to go with the words, too! There are always words that I really detest, and many are on this list, but now I can't think of the others. Probably a good thing though. ;-)

I love this list. I have never actually seen a list of words that are disliked before, but these ones suit the category well. Will you be posting a list of your favorite words...I would be rather interested in that. I spend more than a normal amount of time exploring the thesaurus for pretty, new words.

Ooops...I meant to also thank you for voting for my blog in my last comment, so thanks! I really appreciate it!

Very nice post. Since words are your thing, you might be interested in a series of posts I have been doing on the word play involved in cryptic crosswords. The first one is: http://caroleschatter.blogspot.co.nz/2012/01/cryptic-crosswords-solving-hints-1.html
It has now evolved into a daily series. I find it great fun - much better than ordinary crosswords.
