How to avoid losing your mind when doing a particularly tedious translation? I listen to the radio on my computer with earphones and it seems to help me find the mental strength to push on through with the work when every cell in my brain is screaming out "oh my God, how can anyone write such dull material?!?!"
Not just any station will do, however. If the music is too involving or loud I'll lose my concentration. Through trial and error I've discovered that Radio Montecarlo 2 is my ideal dull translation soundtrack. It offers 24 hour, nonstop soft jazzy versions of every song you can imagine...without commercials! That means there's nothing really that catches my attention or needs extra mental effort, it just provides a seamless rhythmic background that somehow makes the grind less painful.
It's cool, international "atmosphere" music, ideal for your next cocktail party or book club meeting...or dreadful translation!

I wonder if that is the Radio Monte Carlo I used to listen to, more years ago than I care to admit to.
It probably is, LindyLou. Radio Monte Carlo is a French station, while rmc2 transmits out of Italy in Italian. Actually, they use a mix of lots of different languages, but there's so little talking, it's mostly all music, all the time.
Sorry, I'm devoted to radio dimensione suono, "la radio del cuore" - and the only one I seem to reliably get here:)
You can only get one station? Even on-line, Francesca? That's no fun!
Personally I can't hear music while working, even the slightest background noise distracts me and gives me a headache.
However you are right about the dull material, I notice that, every time I give a look at my daughter's textbooks.
It has to be Radio 4 for me but I'll give Radio Monte Carlo a try. I have to have background noise when working!

Adverts are definitely distracting when you're trying to concentrate - on anything. I'm glad you've found a station that works for you :)
I'll have to try it. I can't concentrate if I know the songs, I get all distracted with singing along...
I know what you mean, finding something to keep you focused and moving along.
Looks like a busy summer Sara! I thought that summer would be tranquil this year, but it's been heaving with activities.
